Adwatch: Obama Links Iraq and Economy in Hit on McCain

The Obama campaign is up with a new spot hitting John McCain on the economy, directly linking McCain's stay the course no matter what Iraq policy to the current maladies in the United States.

There are a lot of good things in this ad. For starters, it is important for Obama to make the case -- which Americans already intuit, but the way -- that the Iraq War is at least part of the cause of the economic problems facing America today. But the case could and should be made more explicitly. Instead of just saying that the Iraq War hurts the American economy, show it. The ad goes half the way in the direction of surplus deficit, noting that the Iraqi government has $79 billion more in its coffers than it is spending; why not also say specifically that this comes at a time when the U.S. federal deficit is reaching historic proportions? Why not link Iraq's record oil profits with the record price at the pump in America? The ad is almost there, but it's not quite specific enough.

The only other difference I would make in the ad relates to the inclusion of "better schools". Is this in contrast to McCain on the economy? If so, I'm failing to see the connection, outside of "better schools" being something that Obama is in favor of and something that theoretically polls well. The more focused an ad is, the less scattershot it is, the better it is -- and throwing in one and a half seconds on schools into an ad that is about Iraq and the economy doesn't really achieve this.

Overall, though, I think this ad is moving in the right direction.

Jonathan Martin certainly has a way with words...

Note the garish sport coat and tie they portary McCain as wearing -- he looks like either a cliched used-car salesman or some sort of 70s-era conventioneer in Vegas.

One important thing missing in the ad (none / 0)

Is the video of McCain claiming that ``he knows nothing about economy''. Now, if in every ad, Obama starts putting that video, then it will just drive home the point.

Re: Adwatch: Obama Links Iraq (2.00 / 1)

Obama made a great speech after the race speech where he talked about the relationship between the Iraq war and the economy.  I think people intuit a link if only with the idea that the money spent there could be spent at home.

Obama ads fail to hit home. (none / 0)

Yes, they are interesting and make us feel good. However, the McCain ads hit one idea and drive it home. That's political advertising not public relations.

I disagree. McCain's Olympic ad lacks any theme and appears to be wholly ineffective.

More hard hitting ads on the economy (none / 0)

Good points, Jonathan. I think the ad could use a little more specificity to hit McCain harder. The Obama media team should be tying the Iraq war explicitly with America's worsening economy. Next time, they should use real people in Ohio, Penn, Missouri and so on to hit McCain on trade and the economy. August is the best time to define McBush.

Finally!!!! The Burning bag of poop!!! (none / 0)

An on target ad that put the bag of burning dog poop on the doorstep of the repubs. Good job! Let's hope David & David can keep it going in this direction.

Re: Adwatch: Obama Links Iraq and Economy in Hit o (none / 0)

Obama and the DNC need to wrap Bush and GOP's record around McCain's neck, as well as GOP congressional candidates.  The following issues need to be hit hard.

1. Oil and gas prices are up 300% under Republican rule.  GOP is in bed with Big Oil.  Big Oil is  enjoying record profits while hard-working Americans suffer at the pump.  Repeat again and again that the last time a Democrat was in office, gasoline was under $1.50 a gallon.

2. The economy and the housing market is in the toilet. Note high inflation, record foreclosures, and the fact that the stock market soared the last time a Democrat was in office, but hasn't done squat under Bush (less than 1% annual return a year).

3. Note that deficits and the debt have soared under Republican rule.  The last time a Democrat was in office, the budget was in surplus.

4. Bush and GOP used poor judgment and bogus justifications to get us into a disastrous war in Iraq that has cost thousands  of lives and $1 trillion.John McCain wants to stay there forever.

5. Osama bin Laden is still under the loose

6. Bush and GOP have sold out the environment.

7. GOP wants to privatize Social Security.

WHy these points are not made are beyond me.

Re: Adwatch: Obama Links Iraq and Economy (none / 0)

I think this is a slow build up to a much better and focused fall campaign.  And by campaign I am thinking WWII romp through Europe style campaign.  Team Obama, and the Democrats, have people on the ground EVERYWHERE.  Now they are slowly unfurling the ads.  I want this to be slow, because using all the good ads now, instead of, say, October, is a total waste.  Stockpile ammunition while keeping the repubs honest and the voting public engaged.
