Obama stabs progressives in the back once again

It looks like Obama has lost the plot completely. Being nominated based on the strong support  of progressives, he seems to have turned around and stabbed them in the back repeatedly. First it was the faith-based initiatives, then came the sellout to telecom industry. And now, he sells to the oil industry and is ready to vote for the off-shore drilling.

Looks like he took the progressives for a ride.

Re: Obama stabs progressives in the back once agai (2.00 / 2)

he supports the bill thats a compromise from the Gang of 10.

really I got to ask do progressives seem to think that they will get their platform 100%? that hey the words compromise will never apply to anything progressives care about?

just because progressives seem to think the GOP has no power left, doesn't make it so.

we want our government to actually work, that means compromise people. get use to it. its what Obama has said since day 1, he will build a working coalition

That means we aren't going to be in deadlock waiting for 1 side to give up. means we are going to give a little, we are going to make them give a little, and we are going to compromise and get stuff done.

Re: Bullshit (2.00 / 4)

Then fucking vote for for McCain...or at least Cindy McKinny if your heart is "true."
My progressive circle here in Denver are working on on the Obama campaign 3 days a week now..it isn't even Labor Day.
We know this election is too damn important to sit at home and whine.

Just curious: have you ever thought for yourself in your life or do you blindly believe every Republican talking point no matter how absurd?

Re: Obama stabs progressives ii (2.00 / 2)

Barack's running on the ability to unite and get things done. His claim is that bickering gets in the way of doing deals, and that he won't refuse a deal because some element is repugnant to his base.

In this case he's being clear, even though this is a pander that is bad public policy and could further harm the environment and won't help with fuel costs (and is the wrong direction), he'd let it go to pass the energy bill he wants, give the other side a little face saving gesture, and hope that he'd be able to take it out later, it would be for window dressing.

His thing is to get along, and that means no one gets left out entirely, including really stupid or wrong-headed types.

His mistake is that he didn't have to make this claim, it was a tad too honest and too complex to explain without losing the attention of his listeners.  He could have said - offshore drilling is bad public policy, and, he'll do what needs to be done to pass a overall useful energy bill.

then move-on wouldn't have wasted money on their ad against McCain and his supporters would be able to appreciate his intentions without having to recognize that some details will be offensive, expensive, and in the wrong direction.

Barack says he's a new kind of politician, and of course he is, he is inexperienced, and he hasn't learned to say what he means simply, so that it's harder to misunderstand.

He's not in favor of off-shore drilling.

He's in favor of getting stuff down without making enemies.

He needs to learn how to state his policies in a way that they can't be misunderstood. right now he hands the misunderstanding sound bite on a silver platter.

If Hillary were the nominee and doing this, (2.00 / 2)

then people would be screaming "she'll do anything to get elected" and what a panderer she is. The hypocrisy is kinda funny.

Goes both ways (2.00 / 1)

The very same people who are attacking Obama now would forgive the same in Hillary.

Personally I defended both. They are both less progressive than me, but are solid moderates, highly capable and intelligent, and Obama happened to solidly win the nomination.

No matter what McCain would have used the "flip flop" lie against either Hillary OR Obama. Our job is to counter that lie, not re-enforce it. The myth has been debunked repeatedly on places like NPR. So rather than continue the lie, I think Hillary and Obama supporters need to unite behind our candidate and against the McCain lies. And I would have said the same if Hillary was the nominee.

Hello to the Truth (none / 0)

Hillary was willing to evolve her position for political expediency.

Which is why she back off on Eliot Spitzer's drivers liscenses for illegals. She did a complete 180 on that without a whimper from the Clinton supporters.

and..... (none / 0)

what's your point.

Hillary would be positioning herself for a win if she were the nominee, and I doubt you would wimper about it.

Lakrosse is just another BB. Barack Backstabber. They claim that since Hillary's loss to support him, but backstab him every chance they get.

I don't whimper about Obama, (none / 0)

but I am merely pointing out that if Hillary were the nominee, she'd be getting called out by Ariana Huffington and Markos for more "Clintonesque triangulation" and be called a Republican. Also, Hillary was smart, and positioned herself for the general during the primary so she wouldn't have been dubbed flip flop like Barack Obama is gonna be.

So? (none / 0)

Why are you practicing the same bad habits you are complaining about? The vast majority of Democrats are pretty happy with both Obama and Clinton. Don't you think it's better to fight against Republicans rather than fight eachother? In my political circle there are people who favored Edwards, Obama, Richardson and Clinton. Now we are working together rather than rehashing old fights over and over again to no purpose.

Re: Obama stabs progressives in the back once agai (2.00 / 1)

Yawn. I am not surprised by his recent flops. I knew the guy was nothing more than a libertarian in drag. I am taking pleasure in watching him track to the GOP standpoint on a host of issues. I am expecting him to throw gays and lesbians under the bus next. It would fit his MO at this point. Why would any progressive keep a guy like Meeks or Caldwell around.

Re: I consider myself (2.00 / 2)

a Progressive, but I'm not on the pure bleeding edge fringe of the group. I'm in the victorious Obama place of progressive politics. The kind that can win and the kind that therefore can accomplish progress rather than merely express outrage.
